Distinguished musician, composer, educator, he has provided effective leadership in refining the disciplines involved in the musical art. As a teacher and lecturer, he has contributed imaginative experimentation which has aroused expanded interest in musical composition and also reaffirmed the integrity of technique required for such creativity. As a composer, his eloquence and craftsmanship reinforce his impact as a teacher and his abundant output reflects his boundless energy. A leader among musicians, he also stirs the musical interest of laymen through persuasive discourse and prestigious musical performances. In recognition of responsible use of artistic endowment and in anticipation of enlarged service to his profession, SMU is proud to present him this day for the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa.
